María Castro is an Economist from the San Carlos University of Guatemala. She received her degree in Applied Macroeconomics and a specialization in Financial Economics. In 2010, Castro received the National University Award for Young Academics of UNAM. She has had an intense participation in electronic and printed media and she has received the National Journalism Award from the Club of Journalists of Mexico twice.
Maria Castro is member of the Governing Board of the Institute for Democratic Transition Studies. In Guatemala, she served as Vice Minister of Finance from 2012 until December 2013. She was then appointed Minister of Finance until June 2014. She later served as Minister Counselor at the Permanent Mission of Guatemala to the United Nations, and then at the Embassy of Guatemala in Canada. She was the director of Guatemala’s conditional transfer program and led international development cooperation programs. Has made several publications on economic and financial issues. She was Director of the Degree in Economics of the Rafael Landívar University in Guatemala.
