She was founder of the original B.K.S. Iyengar School for Yoga Teacher Education in the U.S. She is the founder of Unity in Yoga, International, which was the basis for the Yoga Alliance. Rama’s studies of Sri Aurobindo’s Integral Yoga with Dr. Haridas Chaudhuri at the California Institute for Asian (Integral) Studies was the basis of her spiritual exploration of vast inter-disciplinary modalities of Yoga and its related fields.
At the request of Dr. Chaudhuri, she taught Yoga at the San Francisco Ashram and was asked to start the first non-sectarian Yoga teachers training program through CIIS. She has been training Yoga Teachers for 45 years and continues to work with teachers throughout the world in deepening and broadening their practices and studies to include the Yoga Sutras and how these scriptures directly relate to East-West psychology and mind/body awareness through the practice of Asana, Pranayama and Meditation and how they can be integrated into daily life.
Her vast background in Yoga inspired a unique approach to using the Yoga Sutras as an effective basis for Dialogue, Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies. Over the decades she was recognized for her work in using the Yoga Sutras as a basis for mediating conflicts in areas of national and regional concerns such as the Soviet Union, Middle East, Afghanistan, China, Cuba, Spain and Central America. A testimony of Integral Yoga, Rama is a mother of five and a grandmother of twelve.
